BRAND AMBASSADORS
If Carlsberg made brand ambassadors....
Here at Shred Like a Girl we like to do things a bit differently. We didn't just want our ladies to rep the brand by wearing our MTB apparel, we wanted to have a network of shredders that are passionate about getting more women to ride bikes. And here we have it, a group of awesome ambassadors taking on the MTB world in their own unique ways, having all the fun and spreading joy. You can reach out to any of them to talk bikes, organise rides and get connected.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in MTB? Oh gosh, so many things! Try not to compare yourself to other riders and remember that you've just as much right to be riding as anyone else, everyone was a beginner once! Find your tribe and don't be afraid to move away from anyone who doesn't make you feel good at the end of a ride. Coaching either in a group or individually can be very beneficial (it's a running joke that there's barely a coach in the UK I've not had coaching with, so feel free to tap me up for recommendations!).

What advice would you give to someone starting out in MTB? Ride as much as you can with a whole range of people and as many different trails as you can find. Don't feel pressure to ride things you're not comfortable with, just take it at your own pace and if you want to walk something that is fine - you can always go back another day! Remember if you're having fun you're doing it right! (and buy MTB shoes as soon as you can - the grip on the pedals makes SUCH a difference)

What advice would you give to someone starting out in MTB? It can feel super scary at first, but once you start it’s super addictive and you’ll be tied in forever! I personally watched lots of YouTube videos and followed lots of other bikers that I liked as you end up finding out about events, or techniques or tricks that you wouldn’t have otherwise thought of or seen which I always love. I would also get yourself into local MTB groups - they’re super easy to find on Facebook and it makes you feel like a part of the community straight away.

Favourite place to ride: Whistler (Canada), Bare Creek and Blue Derby (Aus)
Favourite bike event to attend? Crankworx
What advice would you give to someone starting out in MTB? Have fun! Dont compare yourself to other riders, there will always be someone better than you no matter what level your at, its all about conquering your own fears and pushing your limiting beliefs and doing things you thought you would never be capable of. And when you do come across those riders that are at a higher level, ask them for tips and advice, the great thing about this community is that everyone whats to see each other succed, wether its hitting that first gap jump or rolling that super steep rock section. And lastly find a group to ride with! Its the quickest way to learn and find friends in the community.

What bike disciplines do you ride? MTB, gravel and road
Local trails: Armstrong, BC- Canada (North Okanagan trails)
Favourite place to ride: Silverstar Bike Park and Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park
Favourite bike event to attend? Woman’s Bombshell Enduro in Vernon, BC
What advice would you give to someone starting out in MTB? Doesn’t matter what type of bike, what gear you have as long as you get on the trails and have fun! I started out in 2018 on a hardtail bike that was too small for me but had a blast. Riding solo is ok! I ride solo 95% of the time and love it. I use those rides to practice on features and enjoy nature. Connect with local female riders in your area. This was a huge boost to get me where I am today in riding. The woman’s MTB community is all about building each other up. Riding with riders better than yourself can really help you progress and they will help you when they saw you need help with cornering etc. it really is the best community out there.

What bike disciplines do you ride? MTB, Downhill and Gravel
Local trails: Ontario Canada (Orillia) - SCMBC Trail Netowrk, Copeland Forest, Heights of Horseshoe and Horseshoe Vally Bike Park
Favourite place to ride: My favourite local trail would have to be Shane's Old Cup in Heights of Horseshoe.
Favourite bike event to attend? 24 hour summer solstice
What advice would you give to someone starting out in MTB? Ride with a group or alone, both have their benefits. Riding in a group you have great company; you can watch other riders hit features (as a visual learner this is something that has progressed my riding) and after ride apres. Riding solo is also an adventure, you can take your time, and "get lost". If you choose to ride alone be safe, tell someone you are going out, bring a small first aid kit, snacks and water. During my solo rides I have always run into other riders.

What bike disciplines do you ride? MTB (mostly downhill), Dirt Jumping
Local trails: The main place I ride is at our local bike park- RideBHM in Birmingham, AL, United States. Other local trails I ride frequently are at Oak Mountain in Birmingham, AL
Favourite place to ride: All time favorite place to ride is Snowshoe in West Virginia, USA!
Favourite bike event to attend? I help film a series of downhill races across the southeast US called Downhill Southeast- right now, those are my favorite events! It is so awesome seeing riders of all abilities come together to race and cheer each other on.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in MTB? Keep going and ride YOUR ride! It's so easy to get stuck in the comparison game - especially as a woman in a male dominated sport. I often find myself riding with people who are way faster and way more skilled than me, which can either be intimidating or encouraging, depending on your attitude. The fact that you are even out there trying proves that you are a genuine bad***. Trust the process & have fun!!
